This review is from: Secrets of a Fix-up Fanatic: How to Meet & Marry Your Match (Paperback)

Susan Shapiro offers great advice on how to find and keep a healthy mate. Shapiro’s tips include “fixing yourself up first, and honest, revealing questions that can determine if the reader is “Ready for Romance.” Whenever single friends start to complain about not meeting anyone, I hand them this book. Joining clubs, reaching out to friends and family for date suggestions and specific guidelines for interacting with matchmakers are just a few of Shapiro’s hilarious, fun to read and brilliant suggestions for getting a great relationship. Mining traditional dating methods for wisdom that can be applied today, Shapiro has created a guide that’s useful even for married folks. Reading Secrets of a Fix-Up Fanatic will help keep couples’ relationship hot, while offering smart advice for their single friends. I bought two copies – so I could gift one to my friend who was complaining that no one set him up!

Great read — couldn’t put it down!, April 11, 2007

If you’re happily married and picked up Shapiro’s new book off your friend’s coffee table, you still wouldn’t be able to put it down. It sounds cliche, but Shapiro’s advice is such a breath of fresh air in a culture all too focused on the superficial and prone to want a quick fix for everything. Shapiro tells us what we sometimes don’t want to hear — fix what’s inside, “dig deeper” as she advises her writing students, reassess your values, and get over yourself, first, before you start looking for what you want “out there.” While she doesn’t mince words and leaves little wiggle room (isn’t it enough already that our society is so focused on blame and getting out of commitments?), Shapiro’s advice is heartfelt, loving and lighthearted. For example, just when you’re in the middle of thinking “how can I ever do this?” out pops a line that will have you laughing hard and feeling positive again. The book is chockful of common sense and concrete examples that ring true. Finally, while Shapiro’s book seems more geared to women and men who’ve been dating awhile and can’t “close the deal,” I think her book should be required reading for anyone dating at any age!

An intelligent view towards finding your mate, December 28, 2013

By Layne Dalfen

This review is from: Secrets of a Fix-up Fanatic: How to Meet & Marry Your Match (Paperback)

I just finished reading Susan Shapiro’s Secrets of a Fix-Up Fanatic. It’s true. She is a fix-up fanatic, but her advice on how to meet and marry your match are so far away from computer dating, bars, speed dating, and everything else “modern” we have become accustomed to that when I brought Susan’s ideas up at our family Sunday night dinner, it captured the whole evening. My daughters range in age from 40 all the way down to 20, so Susan’s book sparked a discussion in our family that seems to be still on-going! I love her honesty. I enjoy the stories she shares and especially Susan’s openness about her own process in her relationship with her husband. I also like that she gives you in-your-face-ideas about taking responsibility for the part you play in the success or failure of each relationship you have. It’s terrific. I related to Susan’s list of “good and bad qualities” in her chapter on How To Recognize Good Raw Material. It made me laugh because it is similar to the one I would have had after my first date with my husband! Over all, the book is great because it is filled with easy-to-follow point form lists that we can all relate to. I have already recommended it to my single friends to read!!
